Orton Farmers’ Market prides itself on offering a wide variety of fresh produce – so you can “do your shop” – as well as more specialist artisan food stuffs, drink, arts and crafts. Not only do we have the butcher (or four of them) and a couple of bakers but we might even have a candlestick maker!

When is Orton Farmers’ Market?

We’re in the centre of Orton village from 9am on the second Saturday of every month – so anywhere from the 8^th to the 14^th depending on how the dates fall. And we’re usually packing up by about 2pm.

Believe it or not, Orton is in Cumbria, but also in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, in the Eden Valley, AND in the Westmorland Dales.

Are all the Orton Farmers’ Markets the same?

The December Market is usually our busiest and the January one our quietest but there are still plenty of reasons to come to both.

Also, given our emphasis on seasonal and local, not all our traders have produce for 12 months of the year. For instance, Home Grown Here usually attends the Market from May to December and The Fellside Flower Company is with us from March to the first severe frosts (usually October).

What else can you tell me about Orton?

Orton is a lovely Cumbrian village, now in the Westmorland Dales area of the Yorkshire Dales National Park too. It is just a short drive from the Lake District National Park and the Eden Valley and is easily accessible by the motorway and road network.

As well as refreshments in All Saints’ Church, Orton Farmers’ Market is also lucky to have Orton Scar Café, The George Hotel and Kennedy’s Fine Chocolates and coffee shop in the village so you’ve plenty of options if you need a break from shopping and browsing.

The village is home to a range of other small businesses too.

For visitors, there’s a children’s play park in the central open area of the village and a network of local footpaths and bridleways if you’d like to explore further afield. Relatively quiet local lanes are ideal for cycling and the village is just a mile or so off Wainwright’s Coast to Coast long distance footpath. The Village Store stocks a range of local maps and guides if you’d like to explore.

What should I know about coming to the Market?

– There is plenty of free parking in the village – so that shouldn’t be a problem – but there is no public transport on a Saturday mornings at present.

– Access to the Market Hall is possible via a ramp. There are also public toilets adjoining the Market Hall in the centre of the village and these also have disabled access.

– The Village Store is open from 8am on a Saturday morning (and the Post Office counter from 9am) so there is cash available from the PO if needed although most of our stallholders and traders now take card payments as the Hall has WiFi to enable this and to boost mobile phone signals.

– We’ve not needed it yet (and hope we never do) but there is a Community Defibrillator at the junction of the Appleby, Kendal and Shap roads, opposite The George.
